Book the El Gallo Ronco show ↗Quick answer
The tablao sits in the historic centre, which the venue says is a few steps from the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum and Plaza de la Constitución. Calle Larios, inaugurated in 1891, is the pedestrian spine of the area. Leave the half hour before the show clear, and use the time after it for a slow walk.
Calle Larios
Calle Marqués de Larios is a pedestrian shopping street, inaugurated on 27 August 1891 and named for Manuel Domingo Larios y Larios, the second Marquess of Larios. Wikipedia credits much of the building design to Eduardo Strachan Viana-Cárdenas, and notes that the street was converted to foot traffic in 2002. A statue of the marquess by Mariano Benlliure stands at the south end. The original design was drawn by José María Sancha and later changed by Manuel Rivera, and the Larios family bought most of the shares in the corporation formed in 1880 and took the project over in 1887. The venue describes a large terrace next to Calle Larios, which is how the street enters the tablao's own description.
Plaza de la Constitución
Plaza de la Constitución has been a major town square since the Reconquista, when it was called Plaza de las Cuatro Calles, and was renamed in 1812, according to Wikipedia. Málaga's municipal offices stood here until 1869, and the square became pedestrian in 2002, alongside Calle Larios. A sixteenth-century marble fountain, the Fuente de Génova, has stood in the square since 2003. Other former occupants include the Casa del Corregidor, the city jail, the Audiencia and an Augustinian convent. It is also the centre of the Feria de Málaga each August and of the city's Holy Week and New Year celebrations.
The Cathedral
Málaga Cathedral is nicknamed La Manquita, the One-Armed Lady, because its south tower was never finished. Wikipedia says construction ran from 1528 to 1782 to plans by Diego de Siloe, that the style is Renaissance with a Baroque façade, and that the south tower remains unfinished for lack of funds, while the north tower is 84 metres tall. It stands near the Alcazaba and Gibralfaro Castle. The venue names the Cathedral first among its neighbours, and the Cathedral also appears in its description of an elevated hall with views of the building. It is one of the clearest landmarks for orienting yourself in the old centre, and its unfinished tower is easy to spot when you have lost the street names.
The Picasso Museum
The Museo Picasso Málaga opened on 17 October 2003 in the Buenavista Palace, a building from the first half of the sixteenth century built over a Nasrid palace and declared a National Monument in 1939. Wikipedia says the collection began with donations from Christine Ruiz-Picasso and her son Bernard, and that Picasso was born on Plaza de la Merced, where his birthplace is now the Museo Casa Natal. The museum is on Calle San Agustín. Check its own site for opening hours, which change through the year, and for how tickets are sold.
Planning an evening around the show
The ticket asks you to be at the tablao at least 30 minutes before the show, and the doors close once it begins, so protect that window. A museum visit fits best earlier in the day, since a museum's closing time may fall before the evening show. The squares and the streets between them suit the time just after the performance. Keep the plan short, and let the old centre be a walk to and from the venue instead of a separate itinerary squeezed in beforehand.
Who this isn't for
It will not serve a reader who wants a full sightseeing plan for Málaga, which needs its own guidebook. It also gives no distances or opening hours, because those change and are best checked on the day. Its aim is to name the landmarks around the tablao and to say what each one is. The venue's own words about its neighbours are the only statement about closeness used here, and a map on the day will tell you the rest.
